The energy at the Gocheok Sky Dome was electrifying during the SMTOWN LIVE in Seoul concert on January 11-12. This two-night extravaganza brought fans together to celebrate SM Entertainment’s 30th anniversary, featuring a lineup of iconic artists. Among the excitement, Shawols noticed a bittersweet moment—only Key and Minho represented SHINee on stage, as they are the remaining members still signed with SM Entertainment.

Onew, who had been a part of SM Entertainment for 17 years, made the decision to leave the company last year. He joined Griffin Entertainment, seeking new opportunities after years in the comfort zone of his former agency.

Reflecting on his departure, Onew shared his thoughts, “To be honest, after being in such a great company for so long, I started to feel like I was getting too comfortable. So, I decided to take on more challenges and see what else I could do. It’s only been three to four months since I left,” reports Koreaboo.

Since Onew’s exit, fans have observed his absence from SHINee-related activities managed by SM Entertainment. Recently, his current agency’s CEO added fuel to the speculation with a cryptic Instagram post, seemingly addressing the reasons behind cancelled SHINee plans, including a winter single, a mini-album and their participation in SMTOWN LIVE.

The post read:

“Winter Single, SM Music, Town Stage, Mini & Concert. Even this is a statement of conviction. Are we a standby team? Everyone is getting cancellations for the same reason—how much longer are we supposed to wait? Isn’t there an issue? Or, should we just stay quiet and live our lives without saying anything?” reports Koreaboo.

Fans quickly interpreted this as a critique of SM Entertainment, further highlighting the complexities surrounding Onew’s departure.

Meanwhile, Taemin, who also left SM Entertainment last year and signed with BPM Entertainment, shared his own perspective on the matter. Although he couldn’t join the SMTOWN LIVE lineup, Taemin reassured fans about SHINee’s future in a heartfelt message.

“I’m writing this for the fans who might be worried about SHINee. I’m sorry I couldn’t participate in SHINee during the SMTOWN concert. I wanted to finish negotiating with the company and join SHINee activities quickly, but it seems like it will take some time to get things sorted out. But we are making progress, and it seems like it will end soon,” he explained.

“The other members and I want to protect SHINee and continue our story together. So, if you think I don’t want to do SHINee or are worried you won’t be able to see SHINee anymore, please don’t worry. I hope what I say doesn’t become a burden to someone else. All the members love SHINee and have the same heart. We are working carefully to prepare for SHINee, so let’s see each other soon with smiling faces. Have a good day and thank you always,” he reportedly said.

Fans remain hopeful that the beloved group will reunite fully, despite the current challenges and the underlying tension hinted at by the agencies involved. SHINee’s story, as Taemin emphasised, is far from over.
